Many thanks to those who responded to the last E-News!
First, a big thank you to Colorado alum CRAIG CARNICK for sponsoring the trip to the Hilberry Theatre at Wayne State to see Romeo & Juliet. The 6th graders LOVED it! For many it was their first experience with live theater. Ms. Lawson then treated the kids to lunch at a Coney Island. Thirty-five very happy kids!!
More thanks to California alum MEG GOLDMAN KASDAN and the KASDAN FAMILY FOUNDATION for sponsoring one whole year of books for a First Grade Class! That is 2 books each week for the year.
Every week an alum reads a book to a first grade class, discusses it, and gives one copy to a lucky child. The other book goes to the classroom for the children to read during the year. Wendy Bernstein Wagenheim and (Hampton alum) Joel Gershenson are our two readers this year. We still have one classroom that someone can sponsor for one or more months!
MEG also sent us an iPad to use with non-verbal autistic students to help their learning! A great innovative way to get the children engaged! We are now a magnet school for autistic students so the need for the iPads is great. Thanks so much to Meg for staying connected with the Detroit community!
. . . AND. . . Local alum BARRY WALDMAN has donated 2 brand new mini-iPads to use with the students. Now that the mini is here we can use that too! Barry is so committed to our students and also speaks on Earth Day and Career Day!
Also BIG THANKS to JANARVUS (JAN) SANDERS (CA) for sponsoring one class for TWO MONTHS of books!!
More thanks to generous donors who want us to use their gifts wherever needed: Judith Beth Cohen, Patrick Hoye, Patricia Sklar, William Paquette, Gail & Gordon Rodwan, Terena & Alex Moore.

NEWS THIS WEEK
Ms. Lawson had a contest to encourage students to do research on the internet. She had 4th graders research the dollar bill and the 5th graders research Michigan. We were impressed with their board presentations and research.
However, we also have students who did not start school until 1st or 2nd grade and they are behind. Maybe no one read to them at home. I am presently working with a first grader who does not know all his letters. He doesn't know rhyming words. It was suggested that we try the pre-school apps for him from the iPad. Today was remarkable. He was truly engaged! How great it would be if we could get more used iPads or mini iPads for the teachers to use with these very young students who learn differently.
Sponsor an event and we will honor you by listing your name on the next E-News!
Thanks for considering our kids!
