MOSAIC PROJECT FOR CHILDREN'S ROOM
AT DETROIT PUBLIC LIBRARY
We are honored to be asked to participate in a wonderful project.
All our students will be creating a mural made of mosaic glass which will be installed in the Children's Room of the Detroit Public Library.
Artist Gail Kaplan has created mosaic murals done by other children from a few Detroit schools that have already been installed. You can read about them in the link below. Pasteur's will be one double sized mosaic to complete this project and our theme will be the Earth.
Every child in the school will submit a drawing that is some way connected to the Earth. They will also have the opportunity to cut glass and/or glue in the glass pieces. Our Special Ed students will be included.
Gail's working partner Dani Katsir will be flying in from India to work on the project in January. You can read about the other mosaics they have done in the link below.
This is a very special opportunity for the students to learn about art, mosaics, the Earth, the library and more. We hope to celebrate the installation with a field trip to the library and a pizza party.
This is an expensive project and we are very grateful to alum Penny Bernstein Blumenstein and other generous donors she is gathering for the funding. This is a major event for us! If you would like to join Penny and the other donors in helping to fund this project please email Penny at firstname.lastname@example.org. If we have enough money we may even be able to do a small mosaic for the school.
Paula Kalt has given the teachers discussion ideas for the Earth theme for their classes. She is also scheduling readers to read to classes about the Earth on November 10. Please contact Paula (email@example.com) if you are interested. Pictured below are Paula and Gail Kaplan showing small samples of two other mosaics to the teachers. Our mosaic will be 7 feet by 15 feet with over 20,000 pieces!
If you have a chance, please visit the Main Branch of the Detroit Public Library to see the other mosaics. Gail will be there on Noel Night Dec. 3.
Thank you for supporting our Foundation so that we can do these wonderful programs for our kids!
