CUTE STORY:

Joel Gershenson was driving a bit fast on 8 Mile Road to get to Pasteur. He was stopped by police and asked what was so important that he was speeding. Joel apologized but said the first graders at Pasteur were waiting for him to read to them and they would be worried if he didn't show up on time. The policeman was taken with his kindness, gave him a warning a

nd thanked him for caring about the kids!

Dear Marcy,

Bad News:

A few of our volunteers were tutoring today in kindergarten and found that many children do not know the alphabet, cannot write their names and find it difficult to write letters.

We need your help for these kids!

Please consider coming once a week for one hour to help 2 children. Bring a friend.

Good News:

We are expanding our Reading Program to include Kindergarten.

We will now have readers in First Grade  and Kindergarten to read and give a book each week to a lucky child and the teacher! We must buy 120 more books for this program!
With your help we can do it!!! Too many children are not read to at home. Language skills are lacking.

If you are a Life Member we would appreciate if you consider our shopping list to the left and help us continue providing books, programs, and scholarships for our kids.

 MORE GOOD NEWS

This year we had the largest group of children participating in the Summer in the City program that we fund. Young volunteers came to work with our students on Fridays of summer school and then ran a 2 week summer day camp which provided lunch for the students. Remember that many students in Detroit do not receive breakfast or lunch at home! Pasteur students come from other neighborhoods, not just the neighborhood in which we grew up.

Sponsor an event and we will honor you by listing your name on the next E-News!

Thanks for considering our kids!

Do You Remember Allee Willis From Mumford Class of '65?

Allee Willis is an EGOT! Very few people have won an EMMY, GRAMMY, OSCAR AND TONY, but Allee has! She wrote the music to "Friends", The Color Purple, music for Earth, Wind and Fire, The Pointer Sisters. She wrote Neutron Dance and September! We took a busload of students on Monday to the Rivera Court at the DIA to be part of Allee's love-documentary for Detroit: Allee Willis Loves Detroit and her song - The "D".

What a great treat for our students to see professional filming and recording in this historic setting. Barbara Heller, from the DIA, explained the Diego Rivera mural to our students.
Google Allee!

The sad surprise was we found that only 3 of the 41 students had ever been to the DIA. We already made plans to have field trips for our students!

Another great connection because of our alumni foundation and you!
Ms. Akra & Ms. Lawson in back. Can you find Allee? Kind of like Where's Waldo!

  PHONICS WORKSHOP IN DECEMBER

We will be participating in another phonics workshop. This time we will be at the Detroit Jewish Coalition for Literacy in Bloomfield Hills.

You don't have to be Jewish to attend! We all want to help kids read and succeed in life.

The date is December 8.

Please reply for more info.

Many thanks to our volunteer tutors & readers who attended the workshop at my house!

Please reply to this email if you are interested in helping a child learn. You do not have to go to a workshop to teach how to hold a pencil or learn the alphabet. It's easy and it will become the highlight of your day. WE PROMISE!
